YOUTH v GOV movie screening, St. John United Lutheran

When: Friday, April 22 (Earth Day) at 8pm
Where: SJU sanctuary, 5515 Phinney Ave N, Seattle, WA.

YOUTH v GOV is the story of America’s youth taking on the world’s most powerful government. Armed with a wealth of evidence, twenty-one courageous leaders file a ground-breaking lawsuit against the U.S. government, asserting it has willfully acted over six decades to create the climate crisis, thus endangering their constitutional rights to life, liberty, and property. If these young people are successful, they will not only make history, they will change the future. As people of faith we care about climate justice for future generations. About the speakers
Dr. Jessica Hernandez draws from Maya Ch’orti’ family in El Salvador and Zapotec family in Oaxaca, Mexico, and an upbringing that’s taken her to doctoral interdisciplinary work that itself addresses interdisciplinary, holistic relations, from marine science to forest study.

Her work has figured in both academia and in community, including founding an environmental consulting and aretsanias hybrid business, Pina Soul SPC, and as a member of Sustainable Seattle’s Board of Directors where she helped the organization establish a special fund for Indigenous Leadership and has hosted several discussions about trans-national Indigenous knowledge on climate change.

    Dr. Jessica Hernandez
Dr. Max Liboiron is a leader in both developing and promoting anticolonial research methods into a wide array of disciplines and spaces. As founder of CLEAR, an interdisciplinary plastic pollution laboratory whose methods foreground humility and good land relations, Liboiron has influenced national policy on both plastics and Indigenous research, invented technologies and protocols for community monitoring of plastics, and created protocols for fostering research collectives.

Dr. Liboiron’s book has been a resource for Sustainable Seattle in pre-development work around local community-led initiatives addressing pollution and policy.

    Dr. Max Liboiron
Jasleena Grewal, a member of S2’s board of directors, is a community member specializing in behavioral health and environmental methodologies in healing from trauma. Help Ballard be idle-free!

Join us to educate residents about saving gas and the planet!

Join Idle Free Ballard to raise awareness about unnecessary vehicle idling and to help drivers learn to “turn it off!” Idling wastes money and gas, harms air quality, and hastens climate change. We have idle free cards to distribute to neighbors and businesses and we also plan some education to make Earth Day “Idle Free Day”! especially at places like the Ballard Bridge and Golden Gardens. Many other ways to help as well! Please join us and bring your own ideas too — learn more at https://www.sustainableballard.org/idle-free-ballard

In support of Sustainable Ballard’s Idle Free Ballard campaign, local radio station KBFG created this cool PSA! Have a listen and share widely!

  • Come volunteer with the Ballard Market gleaners!

Come volunteer with the Ballard Market gleaners!

Help us feed our hungry neighbors!

Market Gleaning is a program for volunteers to collect fresh, local produce from the Ballard Farmers Market vendors and bring it to the new Ballard Food Bank for those who need it most. This is a simple and rewarding way to keep good produce out of the compost bin and into the hands of our Ballard neighbors in need. It’s fun, rewarding, and makes a tangible difference – in 2021, we collected over 25,000 pounds of food for the Food Bank!

We’re always looking for new volunteers to help feed the community while adhering to COVID-19 best practices. Volunteers can expect to help by collecting produce from the vendors, carrying boxes and sorting the collected food into containers at the Food Bank. Gleaning takes place from 1:45pm to ~4pm on Sundays, and we’re flexible with how often you volunteer – even giving your time once a month makes an impact in our community.

To learn more, email Jill at gleanballard@gmail.com with the subject line “New Gleaning Volunteer.”

  • Clothing Swap

    Clothing Swap

Join us for a Community Clothing Swap!

    When: Sat, April 9, 2022, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM PDT
Where: Phinney Center / Phinney Neighborhood Association, 6532 Phinney Avenue North, Seattle, WA 98103
    Register: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/clothing-swap-tickets-273174170297

How does it work? Bring your gently-used clothes that you no longer wear, and swap them for new-to-you clothes from other community members!

What’s the point? Reduce your consumption, increase your sustainability, and save money by giving new life to your old clothes, and adding gently-used clothing to your wardrobe.

What can I bring? Pants, dresses, shirts, shoes – any clothes or accessories in a condition good enough that you would pass along to a friend.

    FAQ:

Should I bring my items to the PNA before the event? You don’t have to, but it would help us to set up the “shop” better if we had clothes before the event. Drop-off clothing between 9 and 10am day-of at the PNA.

Is there a minimum requirement to how many gently-used clothes I need to bring? No!

How many new-to-me clothes can I take home? Day-of the event, we’ll see how many clothes we have to swap, and then make an estimate on a maximum number of clothes to take home.

Do I need to RSVP? Yes! We’re keeping this COVID-safe, so we’ve broken up the event into two time slots with RSVP required.

Do I need to be vaccinated? Yes, proof of vaccination and booster is required for attendance.

Is the item really free? Yes! Completely! We will be accepting donations to Remake, a nonprofit organization that focuses on creating a more just and sustainable fashion industry.

Will it be fun? Absolutely 🙂
