Ballard Sprouts is in Need of a New Home! Can You Help?

After May 2024, the Ballard greenhouse will no longer be available for this project. We have 30 volunteers who love doing this work and we are actively looking for another site in the northwest part of Seattle for the 2025 season and beyond.  Can you help us by offering us space for this amazing community project?

We are looking for a greenhouse with an outside sunny area for hardening off the plants. We start the seeds in February and distribute the plants in April so we are looking for a space that we could use from Feb 15th to April 30th. We start the seeds on propagation mats in the greenhouse so access to electricity is important.  We have a long extension cord if electricity is nearby. The Seattle Giving Garden Network funds the Sprouts project and provides seeds, seeding soil, transplanting soil, row cloth, fertilizer, reimbursement for electricity and experienced volunteers.  If you or any of your neighbors or friends have a greenhouse, or are interested in being involved with helping Sprouts move forward in the Ballard area, please contact Kit and Barb at info@sggn.org. See the photo for what your yard would look like for 6 weeks in the early spring.

If you would like to see the project in action this year between March 3 & April 14th, send an email to Kit and Barb at info@sggn.org to schedule a visit of the current greenhouse/growing operation.

For over 10 years, the Ballard Sprouts project has been growing and giving over 20,000 vegetable starts to Seattle Giving Gardeners, who in turn grow the produce and donate it to food banks. Ballard Sprouts is downsizing to 10,000 plants this year because we have two new Sprouts sites, one in West Seattle at Heron’s Nest and one on Beacon Hill, each growing about 6,000 plants.  These two new locations will make the plants more available to giving gardeners in those areas of Seattle.  We are very pleased to have these two new sites in Seattle.
