Keeping Hungry People Fed & Thousands of Pounds of Food Out of Waste Stream
The SB Bakery Gleaning Team is going strong with 14 current members. The team “gleans” unsold bread and baked items from Tall Grass Bakery and Mighty-O donuts twice per week (Sundays and Wednesdays) and delivers the baked goods to the Edible Hope Kitchen, at St. Paul’s Church 6512-12th Ave NW the next day. Edible Hope serves a free hot breakfast Monday-Friday 8-10am.

In the month of September, the team picked up 37 flour bags of bread (each bag weighing at least 20#) and 41 boxes of donuts (24 per box), which is approximately 750 pounds of bread and close to 1,000 donuts. Being part of this team supports the Edible Hope program, keeps hungry people fed, and pounds and pounds of food out of the waste stream. (Approximately 9,000 pounds of bread and 12,000 donuts per year)
Generally speaking, transportation is needed to collect the bread and donuts due to the size of the donation and the distance to the Edible Hope Kitchen from both Tall Grass Bakery and Mighty-O donuts. After 6 years of leading the Bakery Gleaning Team, Christine Ingersoll is passing on the leadership role to Lynn Livesley, a long time member of the team.
