Our DEI Taskforce was formed out of a dedicated group of Sustainable Ballard members who lead Black Lives Matter demonstrations at the corner of NW 65th St and 15th Ave NW. In 2020 and 2021 those demonstrations attracted over 1000 demonstrators. In late 2021, we began researching ways to encourage more diversity, equity and inclusion in the Sustainable Ballard organization. We have worked diligently to educate ourselves on the struggles and challenges of BIPOC communities and the best ways to support their equity efforts.
In 2022, we connected with leaders at Daybreak Star Center, the Wing Luke Museum and the Coalition of Anti-Racist Whites (CARW). We hosted a book discussion about Seattle in Black and White: The Congress of Racial Equality and the Fight for Equal Opportunity, and planned participation in and facilitation of a CARW Cohort study group in North Seattle which is now underway.
We have maintained a mailing list of 233 Ballard neighbors who support Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Ballard.
