Apply to be part of City Fruit’s first group of Ambassadors by Friday, August 1 at 5pm!

    Program Details

You’ve helped to harvest apples and talked to your friends about the great work City Fruit does, or you’ve attended a spring pruning workshop and helped to steward your local public orchard. Or perhaps you are looking for an opportunity to be more engaged in your neighborhood. City Fruit is looking for you! We are recruiting the first cohort of our new City Fruit Ambassador Program. We want your time and talents to represent the organization and mission to your neighborhood.

City Fruit is looking for volunteers in the five neighborhoods where we currently work (Ballard, Phinney/Greenwood, South Seattle, Wallingford, and West Seattle) to become the face and voice of the organization and the urban fruit harvest in their community.

City Fruit Ambassadors will be responsible for working within their neighborhoods to raise awareness about Seattle’s urban orchard, the annual harvest, and the impact of sharing the fruit with our neighbors in need.  This work will change on a month-to-month basis and rely on the varied talents, skills, and interests of our Ambassadors.

    • What:  A year-long opportunity to promote the urban harvest and City Fruit’s work among your neighborhood.
    • When: Dependent on your interest and skills; ideally, your work as an Ambassador complements your current neighborhood engagement.
    • Where:  City Fruit neighborhood of your choice (Ballard, Phinney-Greenwood, South Seattle, Wallingford, and West Seattle).
    • Who:  You! An active and engaged community member who cares about healthy food for all and making use of Seattle’s urban orchard.

We salute Swansons Nursery and the Ballard Boys & Girls Club

During the week of July 7, Swansons Nursery completed a community gardening and landscaping project at the Ballard Boys & Girls Club. By transforming an overgrown rain garden and a high-traffic grassy area near the clubhouse entrance into a sustainable art garden and parklett, club-goers now have a two beautiful new outdoor spaces to enjoy.  Swansons Nursery, Dunn Lumber, and Mutual Materials generously donated materials for the project.

On Wednesday, July 16, at 3:00 p.m., Swansons employees, staff and children from the Ballard Boys & Girls Club, and staff and members of the Ballard Chamber of Commerce are hosting a garden dedication and an art installation. Community members are encouraged to attend the event and visit the new garden space at the neighborhood clubhouse. As part of the celebration, Ballard’s own Cupcake Royale is providing mini cupcakes for all to enjoy.

    Men’s Clothing Drive – July 10-17

thebridgeSustainable Ballard is collecting men’s clothing, accessories and toiletry items to support The Bridge Care Center at Ballard Commons, a drop-in center for men and women experiencing homelessness and displacement in the Ballard area. They offer a variety of services including a clothing bank, job search support, computer usage, advocacy & referral services.

thebridge2The Bridge has recently moved to a location one block east of Ballard Commons Park and is currently very low on men’s clothing items.  As the warm summer months approach, there are lots of requests for t-shirts and shorts.  Popular items such as jeans, socks, toiletries, backpacks and sleeping bags are also needed.

  • Community Kitchen Potluck Picnic – July 30

Community Kitchen Potluck Picnic – July 30

Join us at an outdoor potluck picnic at the Ballard P-Patch at 7:30 on Wed 7/30!

We’re firing up a Community Kitchen where neighbors come together to cook, learn, save money, have fun and promote good health.

In our go-go world, fast food and processed foods can be tempting time savers.  Cooking might seem like too much trouble or create too much waste in one and two person households.  Or maybe your little edible garden patch is pumping out more produce than you know what to do with.

Together, we’ll learn (and teach!) how to prepare healthy, yummy and economical dishes, for one or for a crowd, using local, organic products.

There are many ways to get involved!
