    Do you want to get involved with a Community Kitchen?  A group of interested neighbors is meeting on Wednesday, July 2 @ 7pm to re-start this great project.

    A community kitchen is a place where people get together to cook, learn and support one another in the name of saving money, having fun and promoting good health. An emphasis on local sustainable foods will be on the menu with a new culinary theme each time.

    Have you ever wondered if any of the seaweeds common to the Pacific Northwest are edible? Indeed they are! Join Melany Vorass on a beach walk during a minus tide and learn about the nutritious, delicious seaweeds that grow right at your feet. Topics include gathering ethics, local rules, identification, safety and general tips on how to cook with seaweeds. Because we will not actually be gathering seaweed, you are not be required to purchase a seaweed harvesting license for this class. Please dress weather appropriate and expect your feet to get wet.

    Rolf Hokansson, experienced garden mentor, discusses what to plant when so you can grow a successful fall veggie garden. Although summer hasn’t arrived yet, it’s not too soon to strategize which cool-weather vegetables you’ll plant for fall—and even winter—harvesting. Rolf will explain how to significantly extend your gardening year.

    Seminars offered at Swansons are free, unless otherwise noted. Some may require sign-up in advance materials can be prepared.     6th Annual Edible Garden Tour – Coming Soon to NW Ballard!

    Now in it’s 6th year, the Edible Garden Tour has been an inspiration to hundreds of gardeners every June. This fun walking / biking tour highlights neighborhood gardens, planting strips, containers, raised beds, chickens, bees and all sorts of creative edibles from fruit trees to berries to veggies galore.

    egt12 bikeBuy your ticket and map at the starting point: Ballard P-Patch / Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church parking lot, NW 85th Street & 25th Avenue NW, on the day of the tour.

    Cost: $10 per person (kids are free).

    Each year we visit a different quadrant of Ballard. Northwest Ballard is the area featured in the 2014 Edible Garden Tour.  In 2013 we covered Central Ballard; 2012 NE Ballard; 2011 SW Ballard; 2010 SE Ballard; and in 2009 we started in NW Ballard, so we are beginning the cycle again.

    This training combines classroom and field instruction to explain how to manage and prune native vegetation planted adjacent to trails, drives, and streets for optimal environmental functions, appearance, safety and visibility. Learn how to prune to reduce long-term labor needs and to lengthen the time between pruning cycles. We will cover key types of native plants commonly used and best management practices for their pruning. We will also discuss common pruning techniques that are ineffective and why, and demonstrate the best pruning techniques for the most effective results. Register Online or call 206-685-8033.
