  • Salish Sea Trading delivers CSA produce via windpower

Sustainable Ballard members Fulvio and Kathy, and Alex Tokar have formed a cooperative that delivers CSA produce boxes from Sequim down into Ballard. The first delivery of fresh, organic vegetables took place Sunday, June 27th, from 10 AM – 12PM at Aster Coffee Lounge in downtown Ballard. Kathy’s new electric truck will meet the sailboat at the city dock and make the deliveries.

Please visit the Salish Sea Trading Cooperative site for more information. Thank you, Beth and Dan at Aster Coffee Lounge, and the larger community for the outpouring of support.

  • Sustainable Ballard turns 10

    Sustainable Ballard turns 10

knitting1Sustainable Ballard is entering its TENTH YEAR!

Together, we have successfully educated, inspired and engaged thousands of our neighbors. Sustainable Ballard provides a great venue for you to help continue this success and explore new exciting engaging projects. We’d love for you to join us in planning an exciting NEW menu of offerings for the community in 2013.

Here are some ingredients for Sustainable Ballard success in 2013:

    • Fun community-building gatherings: interactive events, not necessarily monthly (barter fairs, work parties, potlucks, open houses, and your other brilliant ideas!)
    • Compelling educational events: at Ballard Library or other public locations (do you have an idea for a speaker or discussion that you’d like to present?, a film that you’d like to show? do you know someone who could lead a great workshop?)
    • Irresistible group meet-ups: open to old and new members at least periodically (e.g. BUG, food guild, economy group, knitters)
    • Impactful group projects: some short, some longer term, all with specific educational and community-building goals in mind (e.g. free book library, tool library, edible garden tour, festival)

Come help cook up a big batch of fresh ideas for Sustainable Ballard, as well as actual yummy vegetarian soup to refresh and nourish you.

When is this participatory and fun extravaganza?

    February 12th, 6 pm – 9pm

Please RSVP here to get all the details.

Pssst! If you can’t make it on the 12th, how about coming to our open house on Feb 24th? We’ll be sharing our new plans and how you can get engaged, plus we’ll have room for you to share your own ideas!! Find Open House details in the calendar below.

  • Yes, Virginia, Solar works in Seattle!

If you haven’t yet checked out solar energy, here’s another chance to benefit from the rebates, incentives and green lending programs available right now!!! We’re partnering with NW SEED, Seattle City Light and a slew of other neighborhood organizations, to bring you another collective buying campaign called Solarize Seattle: Northwest. This program will be hosting workshops through April to help you get a system installed before the “no sales tax” incentive runs out in June. The first workshop is this weekend at Phinney Neighborhood Center. A Ballard workshop will be held on February 20th at Sunset Hill Community Association. Register now!

We’re proud to report that the GoSolar Seattle Northwest campaign that we partnered on this fall did very well. Now the campaign is winding up, having already converted 20 families and 116 kilowatts to solar energy! 10 of these families are in the Ballard area, netting a much needed $1500 donation ($150 per installation) for Sustainable Ballard. What’s more, the campaign raised just over $10,000 to support relief efforts from Hurricane Sandy. Community Energy Solutions and Sunergy Systems were a pleasure to work with and we wish them great success in future campaigns. Click here to read the full progress report.
