DESCRIPTION: Growing your own organic food is a delicious way to garden in the Pacific
Northwest, but where do you start? Vegetables, berries, and fruit trees do need special care to thrive, but your time and energy will pay off in abundance, great taste, and nutrition. This class will cover what you need to know to grow a fabulous edible garden for years to come. You’ll receive detailed tips on simple design techniques to maximize production, soil building, planting, attracting pollinators, crop rotation, and other strategies to prepare for the growing
season.
Celebrate the earth by cleaning up the beach at Golden Gardens. Puget Sound beaches get trashed (literally) during the winter months. Help is needed in cleaning them up. All necessary supplies and safety instructions provided. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Please meet at the far end of the parking lot near the wetlands.

The Biotechnology Academy at Ballard High School is working on a year-long science project to enter in a contest called Imagine Tomorrow. One group is conducting a behavioral study on people and solar panels in Seattle. They are trying to collect data on why people do or don’t invest in solar panels in Seattle. There are two surveys — one for people with solar panels and one for people without. They are super quick 7-10 questions surveys.
The group wants to collect as much data as possible to have a more accurate view of Seattle’s look on solar panels. They’ll be using the data on a website they’re creating as a resource for those interested in solar panels in Seattle. The goal is simply to inform people and get them excited about the opportunities solar panels offer.
On Earth day the NW Ecobuilding Guild will host an introduction to Green Walls. We will cover the design, construction, details and maintenance of these beautiful and environmentally beneficial structures. Come and meet some of the people who design and build Green Walls in the Northwest. The event will take place at the Phinney neighborhood Center (lower brick building) from 7 pm – 9 pm. Nicolas Rousseau is an engineer in horticulture. His experience in the living wall industry started many years ago in France. He now teaches the well regarded Living Wall course at the British Columbia Institute of Technology ( http://commons.bcit.ca/greenroof/about-us/our-team/). Nicolas is also President at ByNature ( www.bynaturedesign.ca), which is a company that specializes in vertical technologies in order to integrate nature indoors (as well as outdoors).

Container gardening is great for beginners, apartment dwellers and anyone looking to add extra space or variety to his or her garden. This class will introduce you to the many benefits of container gardening and cover everything you need to get started, from choosing containers and crops to ongoing maintenance. Leave with the knowledge you need to grow herbs, salads, small fruits and heat-loving crops like tomatoes and peppers in containers! This class is lecture-based with participatory demonstration in the learning garden, so dress for the weather and messy garden activities.

This tour includes more than a dozen gardens to explore within walking distance of West Woodland Elementary and the entry fee supports Sustainable Ballard’s community projects throughout the year. West Woodland itself has a new edible garden and will have gardening and art activities on the day of the tour.
