A message from our friends with the Seattle Farmers Market Association

Imagine your Ballard Farmers Market without eggs, pickles, fish or cheese. When Public Health – Seattle & King County recently announced that they want to increase permitting fees in 2015 up to 300% for vendors, and more than double the fees for the markets themselves — fees they just increased by 500% two years ago — many markets and farmers in the King County farmers market community openly began asking, how much longer can we afford to be in this business?

While maybe the first sentence is the extreme, imagine if just one egg farmer quit Ballard Farmers Market. Anyone who buys eggs already knows how early you have to get here to get eggs on Sunday. Eliminating just one of our egg farmers would make it even worse! And we have already been told by one egg farmer that they will consider quitting if these fees go through.

And it’s not like Public Health has been dealing with a rash of food-borne illnesses caused by farmers markets. In fact, there have been none. Inspections in 2013 and 2014 show a dramatic decrease in violations of health codes at farmers markets, so one would think the cost to the Department would be decreasing, not increasing.

That’s why we need your help… right now! We need you to make public comments on this proposed fee increase before December 10th.

Extend summer throughout the year by learning how to can and preserve your farm fresh produce. Take home two jars of produce that you help can while learning how to do so in a safe and effective manner. Classes will feature our kitchen team and a Registered Dietitian to help understand how preserving foods can help your nutrition through the winter.

Las month Jody Grage, Project Lead for SB Knitters, delivered to The Bridge Care Center a bag of hats and scarves that showed up on her porch and two bags full collected at a recent gathering of the Ballard Knitters for the Homeless, plus she delivered two boxes of scarves and hats to Nyer Urness House.

The Knitters have been asked to provide additions to the welcome packages for the seniors moving in to the new LIHI* building.  They start moving in on 23 December and the grand opening is mid January.

Keep those donations of scarves, gloves and hats coming!  For information on when and where to drop anything off, or to pick up some fingering yarn and soft acrylic sport yarn that was recently donated for this purpose, email Jody or call 206-718-1529.

The Knitters meet from 7pm to 9pm the second Friday of each month at Ballard Coffee Works (22nd & Market).  All are welcome — there is lots of yarn just waiting for your needles!  This is a great project for both beginners and experienced knitters.  For more information, contact Jody.

*LIHI is the Low Income Housing Institute.  They are currently completing the Cheryl
Chow Court at 2014 NW 57th Street which contains 50 units, studio and one-bedroom for low-income seniors ages 62 and up. Ten of the units are reserved for homeless seniors.

It’s that time! Seattle Greendrinks and Sustainable Seattle are partnering with Seattle Good Business Network to bring you the Annual Holiday Fair: Give Like You Give a Damn!

Not an event to be missed this year! Tesla Motor Works in South Lake Union is hosting our wonderful event. Come shop for your holiday gifts, enjoy the food and drink and meet friends new and old! We will have music and lots of merriment!

Sustainable Ballard will be there with our tee-shirts and reusable coffee mugs — please join us!

Start planning what you will trade at the Sustainable Ballard’s Barter Fair and Holiday Party in early December.  This event brings together the community, encourages creativity and sharing, creates friendships and offers people a relaxing and enjoyable alternative to the more commercial holiday gift buying experience.

In past years, barter items have included:

• hand-crafted scarves, hats and aprons
• home-grown or foraged produce
• home-made jams, truffles, dried fruit, granola, beer and other delectable goodies
• services such as yoga classes, sailboat cruises, refrigerator deep clean, massage and more

Come help set up the room, help people display their wares, set up the food buffet, decorate the room, etc.   If you’re available to help with this fun project contact Jenny.  Thanks!
