The Sustainable Ballard Festival: Get Involved!
The 2008 Festival is coming this fall (Sept 27-28) and we can use your help now!
- Folks: Mark your calendars for Wednesday, August 13th. We are throwing a pre-festival party! Get a sneak preview of this year's festival and sign up to join one of our action teams creating an exciting area at the festival. Or get first dibs on the best volunteer shifts at the fest. If you are unable to attend, but would like to jump in and help, contact Andrea(at)sustainableballard.org.
- Businesses: Sustainable Ballard is interested in partnering with locally-owned Ballard businesses, as well as businesses and organizations who practice social responsibility and environmental stewardship. If you fit these criteria and are interested in developing and promoting a festival partnership with Sustainable Ballard, please contact Jenny. If you would like to make a personal donation, please contact Inna(at)sustainableballard.org.

- Program
-
- 6:30-7:00 - Potluck! Bring something delicious to share, and meet your neighbors (also BYO plate/utensils/cup!)
- 7:00-7:45 - The NW EcoBuilding Guild will present creative ideas they have put together for the City regarding neighborhood planning.
- NW EcoBuilding Guild’s basic premise is that:
- It's a given that the Seattle area will continue to grow in population;
- We will need to provide more homes for those new people;
- If we want to prevent sprawl (and the associated problems of increased greenhouse gas emissions, pollution, loss of farmland etc.) we need to accommodate new homes within existing urban areas;
- The large majority of land in Seattle is zoned single-family - are there ways to increase density in areas beyond just those currently zoned as multi-family?
- NWEBG will discuss ways that existing single-family zones in Seattle might be able to increase the number of homes, in ways that respect the existing character of the neighborhood;
- Come join the conversation about how to make well-designed, beautiful, walkable, livable communities that are denser, and show images of cities that have managed to do it well.
-
- 7:45-8:15 - Then we will bring it ‘home’ to Ballard…. We will also have Liz Dunigan and Joanne Burtch with us. They are creating a project that will focus on neighborhood planning (specifically Ballard) to support green infrastructure and the urban village concept per Sustainable Ballard and the NW EcoBuilding Guild outline using the Open Space 2100 map as a starting place.
- Be sure to come explore how we can create a neighborhood that will be a multi-sensory experience.
- There will be opportunity to participate….
-
- 8:15 - 9:00 - Learn about all of the fun/exciting/community building projects currently underway in the Sustainable Ballard community.
As always, bring your Ballard Market receipts and leave the alcohol at home.
